An electric animal being constructed
Following World War Terminus, radioactive dust severely depleted Earth's wildlife, prompting the creation of artificial animals.
Because owning and caring for an animal was considered a near-necessary civic virtue and a status symbol, people who could not afford a legitimate animal often chose to buy an artificial, robotic animal in order to maintain social standing. However, because artificial animals were practically a taboo, great lengths were gone to in order to hide the fact the animals were fake. Such lengths included circuits that disguised technical malfunctions as organic illnesses.[1]
Artificial variants were known to exist of goats, cats, sheep, owls, and toads.[1]
