Blade Runner 2039 #1 is the first issue of Blade Runner 2039.

Plot[]

"Early in the 21st Century, THE TYRELL CORPORATION advanced Robot evolution into the NEXUS phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a REPLICANT. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor.

After a series of violent rebellions, their manufacture was prohibited and Tyrell Corp ultimately went bankrupt.

The collapse of ecosystems in the mid-2020s led to the rise of industrialist NIANDER WALLACE, whose mastery of synthetic farming averted famine.

Wallace acquired the remains of Tyrell Corp and created a new line of Replicants who obeyed without question.

One of the first of these, code-named LUV, was gifted by Wallace to the LOS ANGELES POLICE DEPARTMENT as the first Replicant BLADE RUNNER, tasked with the capture and retirement of fugitive earlier models.

A Replicant underground survives, led by the former combat model FREYSA and her human partner AAHNA ASHINA, known as ASH, formerly the first-ever female Blade Runner.
"

In 2039, early in the morning at a crowded Los Angeles food court, three young women discuss whether they would still be friends if one of them was a replicant. Their conversation is interrupted by Luv, who confronts one of them, named Tabitha Rens. Tabitha, recognizing that she is a Blade Runner, runs from Luv as her friends try to attack her. However, Luv easily fends them off and pursues Tabitha to a meat locker. A brief scuffle occurs, ending with Luv snapping Tabitha's neck as one of her friends, Lexi, watches in horror.

At the LAPD headquarters, the Blade Runner Unit is shown impressive data showing that 71% of all reported replicants have been retired, and that Luv is responsible for more retirements than any of them. However, her peers express their distrust in her due to the fact that she is a replicant. Before tensions rise higher, Luv is dismissed from the meeting and informed that she has been moved to a separate office space by herself.

Lexi desperately tries to buy a pair of transplant eyes in order to escape. The scientist she gets them from gives them to her free of charge, knowing that she is off to meet the Ferryman to be guided to safety. She meets the Ferryman at Hermosa Beach and boards his boat.

Luv finds Officer Mills harassing a man outside of his sector. She subdues him and threatens to report him to his superiors for his conduct. She is then summoned to a spinner by Jamison to be given a message from Wallace. He commends her performance in the Blade Runner Unit, planning to use her as the benchmark for future replicant performance. He also promises to make the anti-replicant attitudes she faces worth it. She is then tasked with finding the replicant copy of Alexander Selwyn's late wife, as Wallace feels she will be of value to further replicant research.

The Ferryman takes Lexi to Catalina, where Aahna Ashina awaits her and asks for the eyes.
