Blade Runner 2039 #2 is the second issue of Blade Runner 2039.
Plot[]
"Early in the 21st Century, THE TYRELL CORPORATION advanced robot evolution into the NEXUS phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a REPLICANT. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor.
After a series of violent rebellions, their manufacture was prohibited and Tyrell Corp went bankrupt.
The collapse of ecosystems in the mid 2020s led to the rise of industrialist NIANDER WALLACE, whose mastery of synthetic farming averted famine.
Wallace acquired the remains of Tyrell Corp and created a new line of replicants who obeyed without question.
One of the first of these, code-named LUV, was gifted by Wallace to the LOS ANGELES POLICE FORCE as the first Replicant BLADE RUNNER, tasked with the capture and retirement of fugitive earlier models.
A Replicant underground survives, led by the former combat model FREYSA and her human partner AAHNA ASHINA, known as Ash, formerly the first-ever female Blade Runner.
Ash has helped a young fugitive Replicant called LEXI to escape the city in return for an unusual payment. Meanwhile Luv has been sent by Niander Wallace to investigate the home of dead industrialist ALEXANDER SELWYN in search of a supposed secret Replicant manufacturing lab..."
Ash takes Lexi to a remote trailer, finding a man inside. Startled, she draws her gun on him, but is quickly calmed by Freysa, who introduces the man as Sapper, who served with her in Off-world conflicts. Ash introduces Lexi and presents the eye payment she was given.
Luv is reprimanded for the action she took against Officer Mills, who has filed a complaint. She abruptly leaves for Santa Barbara and the LAPD reluctantly lets her go, as she is acting on orders from Wallace. She arrives at Selwyn's former home and is greeted by a Nexus-8 butler, Clarence, who takes her to Penelope, the current owner of the home. She recognizes that Clarence is a Nexus-8, but Penelope says that she has a special exemption to the Nexus-8 ban. Penelope is surprised that Luv is a replicant and claims that she never met Selwyn, having acquired his home following his death.
Freysa and Ash implant in themselves the eyes Lexi brought them, Freysa having lost hers to Yotun and Ash's to a degenerative disease also effecting her spine and lungs. Freysa points out the irony that Ash used to sell replicant parts, but was now receiving them for her own use. Ash informs Freysa of the replicant Blade Runner and leaves for the city to save more replicants before Luv can hunt them down.
Penelope resists Luv's intent to search her home and Clarence draws a gun on Luv while Penelope attacks her. As the two fight, Penelope reveals that she is an older model of replicant who was employed by Selwyn, who she knows everything about. After subduing Luv, Penelope asks for her to be taken away by morning. Clarence acknowledges this, referring to her as Hythe.
As Ash arrives in Los Angeles, Cleo Selwyn boards a cab.
