Off-world: The Blade Runner Wiki

Blade Runner Origins #5 is the fifth issue of Blade Runner Origins.

Plot[]

"Early in the 21st Century, THE TYRELL CORPORATION advanced Robot evolution into the NEXUS phase – a being virtually identical to a human – known as a REPLICANT. Replicants were used Off-world as slave labor, in the hazardous exploration and colonization of other planets.

Now, on Earth, the NEXUS 4 Replicants have been adapted for societal elites to own for industry and service work. But Tyrell continues to experiment with further enhancements. Because progress stops for no man.

Recently, the dangerous escaped Nexus 5 has appeared in THE SLUMS – DET. CAL MOREAUX's old neighborhood. Tyrell Corp executive ILORA STAHL shot and killed EFFIE, a junior bioengineer, for withholding information on the Nexus 5 program. In an attempt to control Cal, Ilora threatened to burn down The Slums in one week if Cal didn't recover the rogue Replicant. Fully understanding how deep the rot goes, Cal left the force in protest over the corrupt relationship between the LAPD and the Tyrell Corporation.

Now a rogue agent himself, but still tethered to the Nexus 5 mission, Cal has requested the help of ASA, a Replicant with the simulated consciousness of senior bioengineer DR. LYDIA KINE, because time on Ilora's threat is running out...
"

Moreaux goes to a downtown apartment, which houses a replicant servant, Arnault. Fearing that Arnault may be malfunctioning like other replicants that visited the same market earlier, Moreaux insists on going inside. As Arnault prepares to attack one of the residents, Asa breaks through the window and incapacitates him. Arnault, continuously chanting "why?" is taken from the home to La Plume Sauvage.

Asa is unable to determine the issue with the replicant, but Divina suggests that perhaps Arnault is suffering from an existential crisis, despite the Nexus-4's lack of existential thought. After Moreaux leaves to clear his head, Arnault eventually expires. Asa later attempts to repair his relationship with Marcus, but makes no progress. Asa and Divina reflect upon the situation.

Moreaux goes to visit Nia, but is interrupted by Stahl. Angrily, he tells her off and she leaves in the elevator, frowning as the doors close. Moreaux then goes to the slums to speak to Lindon, searching for leads in his case. He is pointed to the bar All Caps, where he attempts to get information from his childhood friend Desiree. However, he is locked into the room and attacked, in order to send a message to Tyrell.
